Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo Urges ECOWAS Parliament to Tackle Rising Insecurity and Coups d’États in West Africa

In a resolute call to action, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament to devise tangible proposals addressing the escalating challenges of insecurity and coups d’états prevalent across West Africa. Emphasizing the need to identify the root causes of military insurrections, President Akufo-Addo stressed that comprehending these underlying issues is pivotal in effectively combating the security threats menacing the democratic fabric of the ECOWAS bloc.

Addressing the 2nd ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar held in Winneba, Central Region, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the imperative mission of the seminar, stating, “Brainstorming on all these major challenges…is the imperative mission of this seminar. One of the expected outcomes is to help us understand even better the root causes of democratic regression and political instability in the region in order to better address them.”

The President underscored the importance of preserving democratic values, asserting that the entire African continent must not regress on its hard-won democratic progress. He highlighted the seminar’s role in proposing measures that reinforce democratic and republican values among political elites and citizens within the ECOWAS community. These measures, he asserted, are crucial for safeguarding peace and stability in the region.

President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the proposals formulated during the seminar would receive earnest consideration from the ECOWAS heads of state and governments. He indicated that the leadership of ECOWAS eagerly awaits the outcomes of the seminar, emphasizing the receptive nature of the authority to innovative and practical solutions presented by the parliamentarians.

The President’s impassioned plea reflects the collective determination of the ECOWAS community to address the pressing challenges of insecurity and political instability. Through collaborative efforts and proactive measures, the region strives to fortify its democratic foundations, ensuring a future marked by stability, peace, and prosperity for all its citizens.
