Nigerian House of Representatives Calls for Reopening of Borders with Niger Republic

In a recent session, the Nigerian House of Representatives passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to reopen the country’s borders with Niger Republic. The request specifically mentions the border towns of Maigatari, Mai’Aduwa, Kongwalam, and Illela. The motion, presented by Kano member Aliyu Madaki, highlighted the substantial international trade that occurs in these areas involving Nigerians and residents of neighboring nations such as Niger, Mali, Chad, and Cameroon.

The border closures, initiated after a military coup in Niger Republic last year, have led to hardships for the local population and strained relations with neighboring Nigerien citizens. The motion emphasized that the border shutdown has contributed to increased smuggling activities, involving youth from affected communities, and raised concerns about potential links to terrorism and other criminal activities, exacerbating existing security challenges in Nigeria.

Madaki argued that reopening the borders and implementing tight control over cross-border trade could foster peaceful relations between Nigeria and its neighboring countries. Additionally, it could help curb smuggling and trans-border criminality, which have adversely affected the nation’s economy and reputation. The motion received approval through a voice vote, although an amendment proposing the restoration of certain southern border crossings, previously closed during the tenure of former President Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, faced opposition from legislators.
