AT least 350 wooden structures in the slum behind the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) and COCOBOD in the Accra Central Business District were destroyed in a fire that gutted the area on Sunday morning.
The fire that started at about 5:00 am destroyed personal effects running into thousands of Ghana cedis as well as vehicles, light poles, ovens and deep freezers.
No casualties were recorded. The tragedy suddenly turned into a field’s day for scrap dealers who scavenged the debris for metal and other materials.
Some victims mostly traders were spotted crying over their loss wares and calling on authorities to come to their aid.
The cause of the fire is yet to be officially established but some eyewitnesses suspected the fire might be from a gas cylinder, the Ghanaian Times gathered.
Personnel of the Ghana Police Service were there to ensure law and order.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) told this reporter that the service had a distress call at 5:04 am and arrived at the scene 5:06 am.
He said fire engines from Makola, Ministries, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and the National Headquarters were mobilised to bring the inferno under control.
“It took fire fighters 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Accessibility to the scene and interference from the public were some of the challenges to the firefighting team,” ADOI Nartey stated.
He said investigations had begun to establish the cause of the fire.
