Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival Honors “Io Capitano”: About African Migrants, with Humanitarian Award

Italian director Matteo Garrone’s film “Io Capitano” (Me Captain) has been chosen as Italy’s entry for this year’s best international feature Oscar competition. In recognition of its impactful storytelling, the film will receive the Humanitarian Award at the upcoming 28th Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival. The prestigious accolade will be accepted in person by Garrone and the movie’s stars, Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall.

“Io Capitano,” which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, portrays the desperate journey of a Senegalese teenager attempting to reach Europe from Dakar. The film has resonated with audiences, earning critical acclaim and awards, including the Silver Lion for Garrone’s direction and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Sarr’s outstanding performance.

The Humanitarian Award recognizes the film’s emphasis on inclusion, solidarity, and cultural diversity. Bobby Moresco, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and honorary chair of the Capri, Hollywood fest, praised the movie’s portrayal of brotherhood and its acknowledgment of the struggles faced by individuals seeking a better life in different parts of the world.

Despite the film’s impact, festival organizers expressed disappointment in the European Film Academy’s regulations, which prevent young actors Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall from being eligible for awards due to their roles in the film. Pascal Vicedomini, the festival’s founder and director, called for a reconsideration of these regulations in light of the film industry’s evolving landscape and the global context.

The Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival is scheduled to take place on Capri, an island off the coast of Naples, from December 27 to January 2, coinciding with the heart of the awards season. The festival has a rich history of celebrating outstanding international cinema and talent.
