Zanzibar Wants to Bring Formula 1 Grand Prix Back to Africa

Zanzibar, an enchanting archipelago off the African coast, is setting its sights on hosting the first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Africa since 1993, gaining the support of former Ferrari driver Giancarlo Fisichella.

The Italian Consulate of Tanzania revealed on its Facebook page that the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority plans to invest approximately €500 million (£426 million) in constructing a bespoke racing circuit. An agreement has already been reached regarding the circuit’s location, with Fisichella overseeing the technical aspects of the track. Construction is scheduled to commence by September 2025, with the goal of completing the circuit by 2027.

Toufiq Salim Turky, a prominent politician, expressed his belief that the circuit will be transformative for Zanzibar and the entire African continent. He noted that it would propel Africa and Zanzibar onto the global stage of tourism and services.

The prospect of Formula 1 returning to Africa has garnered considerable attention in recent years. South African driver Jody Scheckter was part of an initiative to revive the Grand Prix at the Kyalami circuit in Gauteng, which previously hosted the South African Grand Prix. However, discussions faltered due to financial disagreements.

Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton has been vocal about his desire for the sport to return to Africa, actively engaging in ongoing discussions. F1 Chief Stefano Domenicali also emphasised the sport’s commitment to exploring opportunities in Africa.

While Zanzibar’s ambition to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix is promising, it faces numerous challenges, including the daunting task of obtaining FIA approval. The construction timeline is extended, with the first section of the circuit set to open in 2027. Gaining the necessary certifications before the end of the decade remains uncertain.

Nevertheless, Zanzibar’s endeavour to bring Formula 1 back to Africa symbolises the continent’s enduring passion for motorsport and the determination to showcase its potential on the global stage. With the support of F1 enthusiasts like Lewis Hamilton and the FIA’s acknowledgement of Africa’s significance, this ambitious project may pave the way for an exciting future for Formula 1 on the African continent.
