In a significant development, the President of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), Andrew Kamanga, has been arrested and charged with money laundering offenses by the country’s Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC). The arrest, along with three others including FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, sheds light on alleged corruption and financial mismanagement within Zambia’s football governance.
The DEC alleges that Kamanga and his associates were involved in a conspiracy to defraud the government by obtaining funds under false pretenses. Specifically, they are accused of diverting government funds meant for official travel to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast into personal accounts.
The investigation revealed that over K341,902 intended for FAZ officials’ travel and expenses for the AFCON tournament were redirected to personal accounts. Notably, the individuals who received significant sums and travel tickets, namely Madalitso Kamanga and Jairous Siame, held no official positions within FAZ.

Legal experts and anti-corruption advocates view this arrest as a crucial moment for Zambia, signalling a commitment to holding accountable those engaged in financial mismanagement, especially within public institutions.
The football community in Zambia has reacted with a mix of shock and vindication, as suspicions of mismanagement within FAZ are brought to light. The accused individuals are currently finalising bond processes and are expected to appear in court soon to face the charges against them.
The case is being closely monitored by both local and international observers due to its potential implications for football governance, not only in Zambia but across Africa. As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome of this case could have far-reaching consequences for the integrity and transparency of football administration in the region.
