Leeds has ushered in a historic moment with the appointment of Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung as the city’s 130th Lord Mayor, marking her as the first person of African descent to hold this esteemed position. Her ascension was confirmed during the city council’s annual general meeting.

Born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, Councillor Marshall Katung moved to the UK in 2000 to pursue postgraduate studies in Politics & International Studies at the University of Leeds. This educational pursuit was a tribute to her late father, who instilled in her a profound belief in “education for service,” shaping her future endeavours in her adopted city.

Councillor Marshall Katung has seamlessly woven her Nigerian heritage into the fabric of Leeds, transitioning from a diligent student to an influential community leader and now to the ceremonial leader of the city. Her journey reflects the significant contributions of the African diaspora to the UK, particularly through education and civic engagement.

In her political career, Councillor Marshall Katung has been a pioneer, becoming the first African to serve as a ward member on the Leeds City Council. Since her election in 2019 to represent the culturally rich Little London and Woodhouse ward, she has been re-elected, underscoring her popularity and effectiveness.

Her tenure in the council has been marked by her leadership in various crucial areas, including adult health, infrastructure investment, and community cohesion. Notably, she has served as the chair of the hate crime strategic board and as a food champion, addressing key issues affecting her constituency.

Her active lifestyle and commitment to service highlight her multifaceted approach to leadership.

For her term as Lord Mayor, Councillor Marshall Katung has chosen to support the Leeds Community Foundation, reflecting her ongoing commitment to tackling societal inequalities. This choice underscores her focus on inclusive growth and the welfare of all city residents, aligning with her vision for a Leeds that supports its most vulnerable communities.

In her inaugural speech, Lord Mayor Marshall Katung expressed her gratitude and vision for her tenure: “I am profoundly honoured to serve as the Lord Mayor of Leeds, a city that has become my beloved second home since 2000. This role not only reflects my journey but also the vibrant contributions of the African community here. I am committed to ensuring that Leeds remains a beacon of diversity and opportunity, celebrating every voice and achievement across our great city.”
