In a thrilling series decider, Uganda emerged victorious with an 11-goal win (48-59) over Wales, clinching the three-match series 2-1 in Cardiff. The contest showcased intense competition, with both teams displaying exceptional determination on the netball court.

Right from the first centre pass, the pressure was palpable as Uganda faced an early challenge from Wales, resulting in a quick turnover for the hosts. However, the She Cranes swiftly rebounded, demonstrating their resilience and determination to secure victory.

Uganda’s attack was marked by exceptional footwork and speed, making it difficult for the Welsh defence to counteract their tactics. Goal attack Irene Eyaru’s agility posed a particular challenge, but Wales eventually found their footing and began accumulating points, despite initially falling behind 3-0.

Phillipa Yarranton played a pivotal role in Wales’ defensive efforts, consistently winning the ball in the first five minutes of the game. Wales capitalised on most of their gains, although they encountered difficulties in converting turnovers in the final third, often leading to turnovers of their own. Nevertheless, Uganda maintained a slight lead of 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Player of the match, Georgia Rowe, played a vital role in Wales’ performance, both inside and outside the circle. She acted as a pressure release and was also effective under the post, contributing crucial goals.

Wales narrowed the gap in the second quarter, reducing the deficit to just one point by halftime, trailing 25-26. Leah Middleton’s defensive efforts were noteworthy, disrupting the space and creating doubt in the She Cranes’ feed, even if Wales struggled to convert their opportunities.

Uganda elevated their performance in the third quarter, converting turnovers efficiently and maintaining ball possession. Lilian Achola’s precise feeds to Mary Cholhok, characterised by height and force, made it challenging for Wales’ defenders to intervene, allowing Uganda to regain a lead of 38-44.

While Wales showed improvement, Uganda’s offensive prowess proved too formidable. The She Cranes consistently extended their lead whenever the Feathers attempted to close the gap, ultimately securing the series victory.

Despite winning only one quarter, Wales demonstrated significant improvement compared to the previous match, showing more versatility in their offensive approach and a willingness to look for opportunities down the court to Rowe.

With the series decided, Uganda, who finished fifth in the recent World Cup, will prepare to face strong opponents such as Australia, England, and New Zealand in the upcoming Nations Cup. Meanwhile, Wales’ players will shift their focus to league and domestic competitions.

Wales co-captain Nia Jones acknowledged missed opportunities but expressed belief in their ability to compete at a high level, vowing to learn from their experiences in the series.
