Tunisia’s UNESCO World Heritage Site Wall Collapses: Three Killed

Tragedy struck the Old City of Kairouan in Tunisia as three stonemasons lost their lives in a devastating collapse of a section of the historic walls on Saturday. Local reports indicated that a 30-meter segment near the Gate of the Floggers crumbled, causing injuries to two others who suffered fractures.

Tunisian authorities swiftly initiated a thorough investigation into the incident, potentially linked to recent heavy rainfall in the region.

The site of the collapse includes the renowned Mosque of the Three Doors, acknowledged by UNESCO for its architectural significance as the oldest mosque featuring a sculpted façade. This iconic mosque has greatly influenced the design of numerous mosques across the Maghreb region.

In response to the catastrophe, Moez Tria, spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department, confirmed precautionary measures, with a designated perimeter set up around the vulnerable area of the wall to prevent further risks to both individuals and the site’s integrity.

Kairouan, with roots tracing back to 670 AD, holds prominence as an ancient centre for education and religious devotion across North Africa. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, the city served as the regional capital for four centuries until the 12th century when Tunis took over as Tunisia’s political capital.
