Eight of South Africa’s top motorcycle riders are set to represent Africa at the first-ever FIM Intercontinental Games (ICG), scheduled from November 30 to December 1, 2024, at the Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto in Spain. This prestigious event will feature riders from 19 countries, representing six continental unions, and promises to be a historic milestone in global motorsport.
The South African Team
South Africa will field two teams in the competition, competing in the Supersport (SSP) and Supersport 300 (SSP300) classes.
- SSP300 Team:
- Captain: Chris Wright
- Riders: KJ Mononyane, Taigh Janse van Rensburg, and Abigail Bosson
- SSP Team:
- Captain: Clint Seller
- Riders: Dino Iozzo, Leungo Gaorekwe, and Nicole van Aswegen
The teams will be led by Damion Purificati, the South African Team Manager, who expressed confidence in the riders despite preparation challenges.
A Proud Moment for South African Motorsport
Vic Maharaj, CEO of Motorsport South Africa (MSA), lauded the selection of the riders.
“This is a proud moment for MSA to see our athletes standing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best at the first-ever FIM Intercontinental Games. Their selection showcases the growing strength and talent of South African motorsport.”
Competition Highlights
The inaugural FIM ICG will feature 48 competitors across two classes, focusing on team performance. Points earned by individual riders will contribute to their continental union’s overall success.
Yamaha Europe, the official partner, will provide R7 and R3 motorcycles, while official suppliers like Dunlop (tyres), SPIDI (airbag suits and gloves), XPD (boots), and Airoh (helmets) ensure the teams have access to world-class gear.
The FIM has plans to expand the event in future editions to include other disciplines such as Motocross and Enduro, further cementing the ICG’s place on the global motorsport calendar.
Rider Preparations and Challenges
The South African team is preparing intensely, with several riders managing international commitments ahead of the games. Nicole van Aswegen, recovering from a fractured femur, has been training at the Jerez track alongside Clint Seller, with both riders adapting quickly to the Yamaha R7.
Despite limited preparation time on the R7 due to stock availability, Seller remains optimistic:
“Our riders are strong, fast, and experienced. African determination will push us to new levels. My advice to the team is to enjoy the moment—if we’re having fun, we’re winning.”
Building Unity and Showcasing African Talent
Chris Wright, captain of the SSP300 team, emphasized the significance of the event:
“It’s an immense honour to represent South Africa at the inaugural Intercontinental Games. This is not just significant for our country but for the entire continent. Our team’s resilience and unity will inspire on this global stage.”
Damion Purificati highlighted the team’s unique dynamic, with both male and female riders represented.
“We’ve struck the perfect balance of experience and talent. This event is a fantastic opportunity for our riders to showcase their skills and grow through international competition.”
A Global Celebration of Motorsport
As the FIM celebrates its 120th anniversary, the ICG represents a significant step in bringing together riders from diverse backgrounds. Jorge Viegas, FIM President, expressed his excitement:
“The sense of unity this event brings is extraordinary. It is very exciting to host riders from all six FIM Continental Unions in this landmark year. I am confident this is just the beginning of something monumental.”
South Africa’s Racing Heritage on Display
South Africa’s participation at the ICG underscores its rich racing heritage and commitment to excellence. The event also serves as a platform for young African riders to shine on the global stage, marking a new chapter for the continent in international motorsport.
All eyes will be on South Africa’s riders as they aim to leave an indelible mark at this historic event.
