Zambia has received its first batch of imported onions from South Africa, amounting to 950 tonnes, in an effort to alleviate the current shortage of the commodity in the local market. This consignment marks the beginning of a larger initiative to import 3,500 tonnes of onions monthly, aimed at mitigating the scarcity and stabilizing prices.
The Zambia Fruits and Vegetables Association (ZFVA) has reported that approximately 90 tonnes of onions from the initial shipment have already been distributed within the local market. Additionally, the Potatoes and Allied Products Association (OPAPA) has contributed to addressing the shortage by importing around 50 tonnes of onions.

The arrival of the first consignment signifies a step forward in addressing the immediate challenges faced by consumers and traders due to the onion shortage, with further imports expected to gradually restore stability to the market.
