Seychelles Opposition Leader Cleared of Witchcraft Charges

The main opposition party leader in Seychelles, Patrick Herminie, has been cleared of charges related to “witchcraft” after prosecutors dropped the case against him and four others.

Herminie, along with six others and a Tanzanian national, was initially arrested and charged in connection with a case involving “witchcraft” and “unnatural and superstitious” acts. The arrests came after the discovery of two bodies exhumed from a cemetery on the main island of Mahé.

While the case initially stirred controversy and speculation, with prosecutors alleging connections between Herminie and items related to witchcraft found in possession of the Tanzanian national, the charges against Herminie and four others have now been withdrawn.

Speaking outside the court, Herminie described the accusations as “malicious action” and criticised the case as an “abuse of power” by President Wavel Ramkalawan. He plans to run in the 2025 presidential election under the banner of the United Seychelles Party.

The decision to drop the charges against Herminie and his co-accused was made by the prosecutor, although no reasons were provided for the withdrawal of the charges.

The case, which initially sparked concerns about political persecution, has now taken a different turn, with Herminie and others relieved of the legal burden they had faced. However, a new case has been opened against the Tanzanian national and two others involved in the original investigation.

The saga surrounding Herminie’s arrest and subsequent clearance highlights the complexities and sensitivities surrounding allegations of witchcraft in Seychelles, as well as the political tensions that can arise in such situations.

Despite the ordeal, Herminie remains resolute in his political aspirations, his commitment to serving the people of Seychelles and seeking redress for what he perceives as unjust treatment.
