Jubilant scenes engulfed the streets of Senegal’s capital, Dakar, as supporters of opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye celebrated early results showing him in the lead in the country’s presidential election. As at least five other candidates extended their congratulations to Faye, supporters filled the air with the sounds of drums, vuvuzelas, and fireworks, heralding what they hailed as a potential victory.
However, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, representing the ruling coalition, urged caution, describing the celebrations as premature. Ba’s campaign expressed confidence in their prospects, indicating a potential runoff vote to determine the final outcome.
The election marks a pivotal moment for Senegal after years of political turbulence, including violent protests and unrest, particularly surrounding the prosecution of opposition figures. Outgoing President Macky Sall, who did not seek re-election after completing two terms, faced criticism over his administration’s handling of various issues, fuelling support for opposition candidates like Faye.
With Sall absent from the ballot for the first time in Senegal’s history, the ruling coalition pinned its hopes on Ba, while Faye garnered momentum, backed by popular opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, despite being disqualified from the race due to prior convictions. Sonko’s release from detention just days before the election added to the charged atmosphere.
The election saw significant turnout, with approximately 71% of registered voters participating, according to state television RTS. Despite fears of potential unrest, election day proceeded smoothly without major incidents.
The early tallies, while not yet fully complete, indicate Faye’s substantial lead, prompting widespread celebration among his supporters. The final provisional results are anticipated by Tuesday, with the possibility of a runoff if no candidate secures the required majority.
As Senegal awaits the conclusive outcome, the atmosphere remains charged with anticipation and optimism among Faye’s supporters, signalling a potential shift in the country’s political landscape and a new chapter in its democratic journey.
