In a recent announcement, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) revealed the deployment of its regional troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the mission titled “Southern Africa Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo” (SAMIDRC). This deployment, initiated on December 15, 2023, aims to support the DRC government’s efforts to restore peace and security in the eastern region, which has been grappling with increased conflict and instability due to the resurgence of armed groups.

SAMIDRC, an outcome of the Extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government convened in Namibia on May 8, 2023, replaces the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF), comprising troops from Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan. The regional response by SADC was endorsed as a strategic measure to address the deteriorating security situation in the Eastern DRC.

Comprising a force from Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, and elements of the DRC Armed Forces, SAMIDRC collaborates with the Congolese Army (FARDC) to combat armed groups operating in the Eastern DRC. This alliance underscores the commitment of SADC Member States to assist the DRC in establishing lasting peace and stability, creating a conducive environment for sustainable development and prosperity in the region.

The deployment of SAMIDRC aligns with the principles of collective self-defence and collective action outlined in the SADC Mutual Defence Pact (2003), reflecting a unified effort among SADC nations to contribute to the stability of the Eastern DRC and fortify regional security initiatives.
