In a move set to reestablish Africa’s place in global motorsport, Rwanda has officially announced its bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix. President Paul Kagame shared the ambitious plan during the FIA General Assembly in Kigali, marking a significant moment for Africa’s representation in F1.

“I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa by hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix,” said Kagame. “I assure you that we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves. Together we will build something we can all be proud of.”

The proposed race would take place on a state-of-the-art track near Bugesera International Airport, a new transport hub under construction approximately 40 km from Kigali. The circuit, designed by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz, will incorporate Rwanda’s unique hilly terrain and picturesque lakeside views, offering a fast and flowing layout that highlights the country’s natural beauty.

Reviving Africa’s F1 Legacy

Formula 1 last raced in Africa at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa in 1993. Despite Africa’s historical contributions to motorsport and its immense cultural and geographical diversity, the continent has remained absent from the F1 calendar for three decades. Rwanda’s bid reflects a strong Pan-African drive to change this narrative.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commended Rwanda for its leadership, stating, “To be here in Rwanda for such an important moment in the FIA’s calendar is a testament to the strength of this nation, in particular its growing influence in motorsport. The future of motorsport in Africa is bright.”

Efforts to secure a Formula 1 race in South Africa at Kyalami fell through earlier this year due to promoter issues, leaving Rwanda as the frontrunner in bringing F1 back to Africa.

Lewis Hamilton’s Endorsement

Seven-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been an outspoken advocate for bringing Formula 1 to Africa, emphasising the sport’s responsibility to give back to the continent.

“Africa is the place where humanity began, and yet it remains ignored by Formula 1 while other locations are prioritised,” Hamilton said earlier this year. “A Grand Prix in Africa would showcase the continent’s beauty, bring in tourism, and provide opportunities for investment. It’s time to do this.”

Hamilton’s call for action aligns with Rwanda’s vision of hosting an event that not only celebrates motorsport but also amplifies Africa’s role in the global sporting arena.

A Hub of Innovation and Sustainability

Rwanda’s proposal comes with a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and road safety—values shared with the FIA. The project also highlights the nation’s growing influence in global sports. The circuit near Bugesera will leverage cutting-edge design principles, aligning with Rwanda’s eco-friendly policies and showcasing the country’s dedication to technological advancement.

In addition to fostering tourism, the Grand Prix would cement Rwanda’s position as a key player in global motorsport, paving the way for increased opportunities across Africa.

A Continental Milestone

Africa has long been overlooked in the world of Formula 1, but Rwanda’s bid signals a transformative moment. As the “Land of a Thousand Hills” sets its sights on hosting one of the most prestigious sporting events, it underscores Africa’s ability to contribute meaningfully to global culture, innovation, and sports.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed optimism about the bid: “Rwanda’s commitment and the progress we’ve made so far are encouraging. A Formula 1 Grand Prix in Africa is not just a sporting necessity but a celebration of a continent that has so much to offer the world.”

Conclusion

Rwanda’s push to host a Formula 1 race is more than just a sporting bid—it’s a bold statement of African resilience, innovation, and ambition. As the continent rallies behind this historic opportunity, Rwanda stands poised to bring the roar of F1 engines back to Africa, inspiring a new generation and reminding the world of Africa’s boundless potential.
