In a groundbreaking move, Icelandic low-cost carrier PLAY Airlines has unveiled plans to launch the first-ever direct flights from Reykjavik to Marrakech, Morocco. Scheduled to commence operations in October, the airline aims to bridge the gap between Iceland and Marrakech with two weekly flights.
Expressing excitement about the venture, Birgir Jonsson, CEO of PLAY, emphasised Marrakech’s allure as a city steeped in history and culture. “Everywhere we go, we give the competition a run for their money,” stated Jonsson, underlining the airline’s commitment to making travel more accessible and affordable.
The collaboration between PLAY and the Moroccan National Tourist Office signifies a concerted effort to enhance accessibility for North American and European travellers to Marrakech, leveraging Iceland’s strategic position as a transatlantic hub.
The inaugural flight from Keflavik International Airport to Marrakech Menara Airport is scheduled for October 17th, with PLAY offering flights on Thursdays and Sundays. Ticket sales for this eagerly anticipated route are already underway on the airline’s website.
In addition to the Marrakech route, PLAY has unveiled plans for an additional connection to Madeira, expanding its portfolio of offerings for customers seeking diverse travel experiences.
These strategic expansions come at a time when Morocco is witnessing increased activity in its aviation sector, spurred by preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. As Morocco prepares to co-host this prestigious tournament, the demand for air travel is expected to surge, attracting airlines to broaden their operations within the country.
PLAY’s foray into Marrakech marks a significant milestone, as it becomes the first scheduled airline to offer direct flights between Iceland and Africa, underscoring the airline’s commitment to expanding horizons and meeting the evolving travel needs of its clientele.
