Nigeria Secures Place in Winter Youth Olympics Curling Events

Nigeria has secured Africa’s qualification places for the curling events at the upcoming Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. Nigeria was the sole African nation to participate in the World Junior-B Curling Championships in both the men’s and women’s competitions in Lohja, Finland. Despite finishing at the bottom of their respective groups, Nigeria’s participation marked a historic achievement as the country’s first appearance on ice.

The success was celebrated by the Nigeria Curling Federation, with President Daniel Damola expressing pride in the home-based athletes and grassroots efforts that made it possible. However, Damola also noted that Nigeria’s curlers achieved this milestone without significant support from the government, Nigeria Olympic Committee, or sponsors.

Gangwon 2024 will host two curling events, with 16 countries competing in the mixed team competition and 24 in the mixed doubles. The curling competitions are scheduled to take place at the Gangneung Curling Centre, which previously hosted events at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Nigeria’s journey to the Winter Youth Olympics was fraught with challenges, including a lack of ice facilities in the country and limited financial support. Despite these obstacles, the team’s qualification reflects their determination and dedication.

This achievement highlights the broader challenges facing winter sports in Africa, where limited infrastructure and resources often hinder participation and development. Nevertheless, Nigeria’s historic qualification is a testament to the resilience and passion of its young athletes.
