Nairobi, Kenya: Gas Cylinder Explosion Claims Lives

In a heartbreaking incident, a gas cylinder explosion rocked Nairobi’s Embakasi district, resulting in the loss of at least three lives and leaving nearly 300 people injured. This catastrophic event unfolded late at night, sending shockwaves through the community.

The explosion occurred when a gas-laden truck exploded in a parking yard, creating a massive fireball that rapidly engulfed the surroundings. Residential homes, businesses, and vehicles fell victim to the blaze, causing extensive damage. The toll included 271 people taken to hospitals, with 25 of them being children, and 27 others treated on-site for non-life-threatening injuries.

The tragedy exposes a concerning oversight as it has been revealed that the gas storage site was operating illegally. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) had denied construction permits for a liquefied petroleum gas storage and filling plant at the site three times in the past year. The reasons for rejection were primarily due to inadequate safety measures and the high population density around the proposed area.

This incident has raised questions about the enforcement of safety regulations and the potential role of corruption in allowing the illegal operation to continue. It highlights the urgent need for accountability and the imperative to prevent such disasters in the future.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, demanding that those responsible take full responsibility for the explosion and compensate the victims. He emphasised the importance of upholding safety regulations and combating corruption to ensure the safety and well-being of all Kenyans.

Kenyan Vice-President Rigathi Gachagua echoed these sentiments, promising a stern government response to hold those culpable accountable. He stressed the need for adherence to the rule of law and emphasised the moral obligation to prioritise safety over profit.
