Minister Signals End of Load Shedding in South Africa Within Reach

In a promising update, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, has declared that the end of load shedding in South Africa is imminent, citing Eskom’s recent achievement of an Energy Availability Factor (EAF) of 65.5%.

Ramokgopa lauded Eskom’s accomplishment on the power utility’s Facebook platform, emphasising that the EAF milestone signifies a significant step towards resolving the country’s energy deficit. He credited this success to Eskom’s robust maintenance-led recovery strategy, which has demonstrated its effectiveness despite inherent risks.

Highlighting the return of key power units such as Medupi Unit 4, Koeberg Unit 2, and the synchronisation of Kusile Unit 6 in the coming months, Ramokgopa expressed confidence in breaching peak load shedding. Additionally, he underscored the role of rooftop solar initiatives and private sector investments in bolstering the nation’s energy resilience.

Eskom echoed this optimism on social media, noting 35 consecutive days without load shedding and a notable decrease in Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF), reflecting improved operational efficiency and reliability.

As South Africa continues its journey towards energy sovereignty, Ramokgopa stressed the importance of sustaining and enhancing recent achievements. With concerted efforts and strategic investments, the Minister affirmed that the nation has turned a corner, bringing the end of load shedding within touching distance.
