Mauritius Quarantines Norwegian Cruise Ship

The Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA) has taken a precautionary measure by denying docking access to a Norwegian cruise ship, the Norwegian Dawn, amid concerns of a potential health risk. This decision comes after several passengers on board the ship exhibited mild symptoms of a stomach illness during its voyage to South Africa.

In a statement released on Sunday, the MPA emphasised the importance of prioritising the health and safety of passengers and the nation as a whole. Samples were collected from 15 quarantined passengers, with test results expected within 48 hours. Until the results are obtained, both boarding and disembarking activities have been prohibited.

The Norwegian Dawn, with 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members on board, had plans for approximately 2,000 passengers to disembark in Port Louis, Mauritius, with an additional 2,279 passengers expected to board for the next leg of the journey.

Fortunately, after thorough examination, Mauritian health authorities confirmed that the illness was gastroenteritis and not cholera, providing assurance to both passengers and authorities. Despite the delay and uncertainty, passengers aboard the ship maintained a calm demeanour, engaging in various onboard activities.

The delayed disembarkation is expected to last until Tuesday, 27th February, disrupting passengers’ travel plans. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the operator of the Norwegian Dawn, has been proactive in providing assistance to affected passengers, offering hotel accommodations and arranging modified travel arrangements.

While the situation caused inconvenience and disruption, the collaborative efforts between Mauritian authorities and the cruise ship’s management underscored the commitment to ensuring the well-being of all individuals involved.
