In a significant move aimed at boosting tourism and trade, Malawi has announced the removal of visa restrictions for travellers from 79 countries. The decision, announced by Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhałe through a gazette notice, is part of a broader effort to enhance accessibility and promote economic growth in the country.
The amended immigration regulations, effective immediately, lift visa barriers for citizens from a diverse range of nations including the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Germany, Australia, Canada, and several African countries such as Ghana, Gambia, and Sierra Leone. Nationals from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) are also exempt from visa requirements.
The move underscores Malawi’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for travellers and capitalising on the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule hailed the decision as monumental, emphasising its potential to unleash the untapped wonders of Malawi and attract visitors from around the globe.
The changes also include exemptions for certain groups such as diplomats and government officials, as well as countries with mutual exchange agreements for multiple entry visas with Malawi. Additionally, the validity of multiple entry visas has been extended to up to 12 months under the new visa regulations.
The British embassy in Malawi has encouraged its nationals to take advantage of the relaxed visa restrictions and explore the country’s popular tourist attractions. Malawi’s decision to ease visa requirements aligns with similar initiatives in Kenya and Rwanda, further opening up African destinations for travellers across the continent.
