Kenya to Proceed with Police Deployment to Haiti

Kenya’s President William Ruto has affirmed the nation’s commitment to leading a UN-backed multinational police force aimed at addressing gang violence in Haiti. This announcement follows discussions between President Ruto and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken regarding the expedited deployment of police officers to Haiti.

President Ruto confirmed Kenya’s readiness to take charge of the UN Security Support Mission in Haiti once a transitional presidential council is established in the Caribbean nation. He assured Secretary Blinken of Kenya’s dedication to restoring peace and security in Haiti through this initiative.

However, the formation of the transitional council in Haiti may face delays, as some political parties are reportedly opposing the process. Once established, the council will be responsible for appointing an interim prime minister and council of ministers to lead Haiti until elections are held. Additionally, the new administration will collaborate with the international police force led by Kenya to address gang violence effectively.

The deployment of Kenyan police officers was temporarily put on hold following the announcement of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation pending the establishment of the transitional council. Nevertheless, President Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to the deployment after being briefed by Secretary Blinken on the latest developments in Haiti.

The deployment plan had previously faced legal challenges in Kenya, with the country’s top court ruling it unconstitutional due to a lack of reciprocal agreements between Kenya and Haiti. However, reciprocal agreements were signed between the two nations on March 1, clearing the way for the deployment to proceed.

Gang violence in Haiti has escalated significantly in recent weeks, with attacks on police stations, airports, and prisons leading to widespread chaos and displacement. President Henry has been unable to return to Haiti after being locked out of the country, remaining in Puerto Rico since last week.

As Haiti continues to grapple with escalating violence and instability, the deployment of the multinational police force led by Kenya holds promise for restoring peace and security in the region. President Ruto’s reaffirmation of Kenya’s commitment underscores the nation’s dedication to supporting international efforts to address crises and promote stability in affected regions.
