Kenya has made history by appointing its first female air force commander, Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed. President William Ruto made the groundbreaking appointment in the wake of a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of the previous military chief and others, necessitating new leadership.

Maj Gen Ahmed’s appointment marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s military history, breaking gender barriers in a role traditionally dominated by men. She previously made history as the first woman to attain the ranks of brigadier and major general in the Kenyan military.

Born in 1965, Maj Gen Ahmed completed her education at Aga Khan High School in Nairobi. She furthered her military education at institutions such as the National Defence College and the Defence Staff College, graduating in July 2000. Additionally, she holds a Diploma in Management from Strathmore University College.

Her journey in the military began in 1983 when she joined the Women Service Corps, an auxiliary service that provided support duties within the military. Despite facing discouragement from some family members, she remained determined to pursue her passion for the military, inspired by her uncle’s discipline and hard work.
