Hackers Take Over Malawi Immigration System
Hackers Take Over Malawi Immigration System

Malawi’s passport issuance system has been compromised by a cyber-attack, rendering the country unable to issue passports to its citizens. President Lazarus Chakwera disclosed this development in a statement to parliament, revealing that the system was hacked and is currently under the control of unidentified hackers who are demanding a ransom in exchange for relinquishing control. Despite the demand, President Chakwera firmly stated the government’s stance against paying the ransom, emphasising that public funds would not be used to appease criminals or negotiate with attackers.

Reports indicate that the hacking incident occurred in mid-January, although official confirmation was not provided until recently. Investigations have revealed conflicting information regarding the circumstances leading to the system’s compromise. While initial reports suggested a lapse in the system’s licensing, further investigations suggest that the government’s attempt to bypass software licensing requirements may have triggered the cyber-attack.

The President has instructed the Immigration Department to devise a temporary workaround within three weeks to resume passport issuance while efforts to regain control of the system continue. However, the restoration process has faced significant challenges, with technical experts struggling to resolve the issue.

The cyber-attack on Malawi’s immigration service poses a serious national security threat, according to President Chakwera. He assured Malawians that efforts were underway to address the problem and develop long-term solutions with enhanced security measures.

The suspension of passport issuance has sparked concerns among Malawians, particularly young people seeking job opportunities abroad. This is not the first time passport issuance has been disrupted in recent years, with previous issues stemming from shortages of passport booklets and foreign currency, as well as contractual irregularities.

Despite the challenges, President Chakwera reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring the security of personal data. Malawians eagerly await updates on the situation and hope for a swift resolution to the passport issuance backlog.
