Guinea’s military junta has dissolved the country’s interim government and announced plans to appoint a new administration, according to a televised address by presidential spokesperson and Secretary General of the Presidency, Amara Camara, late Monday.

The West African country has been under military rule since a coup in September 2021, led by military officer Mamadi Doumbouya.

Camara stated in a state broadcast that the government would continue to operate under deputy secretary generals until new ministers are appointed. Additionally, Chief of Army General Staff Ibrahim Sory Bangoura announced that the bank accounts of current ministers would be frozen, and their passports confiscated.

The dissolved interim government, led by Prime Minister Bernard Goumou, had been in place since July 2022.

The coup in September 2021 saw the military overthrow elected President Alpha Condé, following protests over Condé’s controversial bid for a third term.

While the junta did not provide a reason for the dissolution, combating corruption has been one of the stated objectives of Guinea’s military leaders.

Guinea’s military junta’s move to dissolve the government was met with condemnation from regional blocs such as Ecowas, the African Union, and the UN. These organisations have strongly opposed the spate of coups in West and Central Africa in recent years.

Guinea is expected to hold elections to restore democratic rule within 10 months, as per the transition timeline set by the junta and Ecowas, which expires in 24 months.
