Ghana’s recently acquired train from Poland, intended to operate on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, was involved in an accident during a test run in the Asuogyaman district of the Eastern Region.
The Ministry of Railways Development confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred around 12:10 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The train collided with a stationary vehicle positioned directly across the rail track as it approached a curve at Km76+100.
Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to stop completely before colliding with the vehicle. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and all passengers, drivers, crew, and bystanders are safe. The vehicle was unmanned, and the location where it was found is not designated as an authorised level crossing.

The incident has been reported to the police, and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. The damaged train has been moved to the workshop for further assessment and necessary repairs.
The Ministry assured the public of its commitment to safety and the continued safe operation of the railway system. Ghana procured the contemporary diesel-powered trains from Poland to enhance the country’s railway transport system.
Minister of Railway Development, Peter Amewu, confirmed that engineers are working on repairing the damaged train. He stressed that none of the passengers or crew onboard sustained injuries, and efforts are underway to assess the extent of the damage and expedite repairs to return the train to service.
The accident underscores the importance of adhering to safety protocols when operating or crossing railway tracks. Ghana’s railway development aims to improve public transport and open up new routes to enhance connectivity within the country and the region.
