Ghana has parted ways with coach Chris Hughton following the national team’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The decision came after the Black Stars finished their group stage with just two points, drawing 2-2 against both Egypt and Mozambique and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their opening match.
Despite having hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams, Ghana was eliminated when results did not go in their favour. Chris Hughton, who had been appointed as Ghana’s head coach in February the previous year, faced the consequences of the team’s disappointing performance.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) released a statement stating, “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.” Additionally, the GFA decided to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars. The GFA promised to provide a roadmap for the future direction of the national team in the coming days.
Chris Hughton, known for his stints with clubs like Newcastle United and Brighton, had been working as a technical adviser for Ghana since February 2022. He took over as head coach after Otto Addo stepped down following the 2022 World Cup.
Ghana’s recent struggles in major tournaments, including the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2022 World Cup, raised questions about the team’s performance and leadership. The decision to part ways with Hughton signals the need for a fresh start and a new direction for Ghanaian football.
