Eswatini to Legalize Cannabis for Medical Use

In a significant move echoing its African counterparts, Eswatini is set to legalise cannabis for medical purposes, marking a pivotal shift from a colonial-era drug law established nearly a century ago.

Led by King Mswati III, the Eswatini government has introduced legislation to legalise cannabis, aligning with several other African nations in promoting its development for medicinal applications.

Government spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo underscores the benefits of legalisation, citing its potential to curb the black market, boost tax revenues, and empower local farmers. Nxumalo emphasises that the move aims to foster economic growth and support the livelihoods of Eswatini’s citizens.

With U.S.-based company Profile Solutions as the sole authorised cannabis grower in the country, Eswatini is working to amend provisions of a 1922 statute enacted during British colonial rule.

Dr. Thys Louren, an occupational medical practitioner at Occupational Health Eswatini, advocates for the legalisation of cannabis, citing its potential to revolutionise healthcare, society, and the economy. His stance mirrors that of the Eswatini government.

E. Nathi Dlamini of Business Eswatini views medical cannabis as a strategic avenue for the nation to tap into the global cannabis market, creating employment opportunities and driving economic growth with government backing.

While the cannabis trade has provided a significant source of income for many in Eswatini’s economy, particularly in the absence of ample job opportunities, local merchants like Maqhawe Tsabedze express optimism about the decriminalisation, hoping it will protect their livelihoods from police raids and enable sustainable income generation.

The bill awaits approval by three-fourths of the House of Assembly and Senate to become law, marking a potential turning point in Eswatini’s approach to cannabis regulation and its impact on various facets of society and the economy.
