Egypt has once again demonstrated its prowess in handball by clinching the championship title at the 2024 African Men’s Handball Championship, held in Egypt from January 17 to 27, 2024. This victory marks their third consecutive win in the competition and their ninth continental title, putting them just one title short of record holders Tunisia.
The Pharaohs began the championship strongly, winning all three of their group stage matches against Guinea, Cameroon, and the Congo. Their impressive performance allowed them to advance to the quarter-finals, where they secured a convincing victory over Angola with a score of 37-25.
In the semi-finals, Egypt faced off against Tunisia, the record champions of the tournament. Despite the tough challenge, the Pharaohs emerged victorious with a score of 30-25. The final showdown saw Egypt going head-to-head with Algeria, a seven-time champion. However, Egypt proved to be the stronger team, winning the match 29-21 and claiming the championship title.
This remarkable victory not only secured Egypt’s ninth continental title but also earned them a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking their eighth appearance in Olympic handball. Egypt will also participate in the 2025 World Men’s Handball Championship, scheduled to take place in Croatia, Denmark, and Norway.
The 2024 CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship featured 16 teams divided into four groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stages. Egypt, along with Tunisia, Algeria, and Cape Verde, progressed with perfect records, winning all three of their group matches.
In the quarter-finals, Egypt continued their dominant run, defeating Angola with a score of 37-25. Tunisia and Algeria also secured impressive victories against DR Congo and Guinea, respectively. Cape Verde faced a tougher challenge but managed to secure a 31-22 win over Morocco.
The semi-finals witnessed more balanced matches, with Egypt defeating Tunisia 30-25 and Algeria returning to the final after a 10-year wait with a 32-26 victory over Cape Verde.
Egypt’s victory in the final highlighted their depth and experience in handball, as they secured a seven-goal lead at halftime and maintained their lead to win the championship.
In the bronze medal match, Tunisia emerged victorious with a 35-28 win over Cape Verde, adding to their impressive record in the competition.
Egypt is now closely trailing Tunisia in terms of the most championship titles in the CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship, with nine titles to Tunisia’s ten. Algeria follows in third place with seven titles.
The top five teams from the tournament—Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Cape Verde, and Guinea—have all secured berths for the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship, further cementing their positions as handball powerhouses.
Egypt’s qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics marks their eighth appearance in Olympic handball, with their best performance being a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Pharaohs have been a consistent presence in Olympic handball, making their debut at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics.
Additionally, the second and third-placed teams in the 2024 CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship, Algeria and Tunisia, will participate in the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, where they will compete for a chance to secure their spots at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
