The blast at an oil terminal in Conakry, Guinea, is believed to have claimed at least eight lives so far and left 84 injured, according to a senior police officer. The explosion, occurring in the Kaloum district, shattered nearby homes’ windows and prompted hundreds to evacuate. This incident, occurring at Guinea’s sole oil terminal, unleashed a massive fire visible from afar, leading firefighters to the scene as tanker trucks departed under military and police escort.

Authorities swiftly responded, shutting schools in the capital and advising workers to remain at home due to the fire’s uncertain cause and potential implications for the population. Social media shared images of thick black smoke billowing from the area.

Guinea’s government closed schools and instructed both public and private sector employees to stay home following the explosion at the primary fuel depot. The fire, whose origin remains unknown, prompted concerns about its potential consequences for the community. Hospitals reported numerous injuries, with a surge of patients arriving at major medical facilities in Conakry.

As investigations proceed, service stations will remain closed, and authorities intend to release an update on the situation while initiating a comprehensive inquiry into the cause and those accountable for the incident. Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with the affected area cordoned off by the police and power disrupted in the vicinity.
