Cape Town, South Africa: Table Mountain Wildfire: Fire Mostly Contained

Around 100 firefighters engaged in containing a wildfire that erupted on the slopes of Table Mountain near the cableway station. The South African National Parks Board reported that the fire, which sparked under hot and windy conditions in Cape Town, has been largely contained, with firefighting efforts significantly quelling the blaze.

Lauren Howard-Clayton, a regional spokesperson for the South African National Parks, revealed that the fire is roughly 90% contained, with ongoing efforts to fully control the situation before investigating the cause.

The blaze initially surged due to strong southeasterly winds, enveloping the city bowl in smoke. Firefighters promptly responded, successfully controlling the fire above Molteno Road in Oranjezicht, Table Mountain.

Approximately 100 firefighters, including teams from NCC Environmental Services and the Volunteer Wildfire Services, collaborated to combat the flames. Two huey helicopters were also deployed to assist containment efforts, leading to the suspension of services by the Aerial Cableway as a safety precaution.

The firefighting operations concluded around 15:38, and SANParks expressed gratitude to all involved parties. They acknowledged the concerted efforts of Table Mountain National Park, NCC Wildfire, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Working on Fire teams, pilots, and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services.

SANParks urged public cooperation with firefighters’ instructions, emphasising the suspension of operations as a measure to support firefighting efforts. The prompt and efficient response by the firefighting teams contributed significantly to containing the fire and mitigating potential damage to the area.
