The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, has been closely monitoring the escalating tension following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Ethiopia and the region of Somalia (Somaliland).
Expressing deep concern, the Chairperson calls for restraint and mutual respect to ease the rising tensions between the Governments of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia. He emphasises the importance of refraining from any actions that might inadvertently exacerbate the strained relations between these neighbouring Eastern African nations.
The Chairperson underscores the critical need to uphold the unity, territorial integrity, and absolute sovereignty of all member states within the African Union, including the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Additionally, emphasising the significance of adhering to the principles of good neighbourliness, he highlights the pivotal role of promoting and solidifying peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
In urging the two brotherly countries to swiftly engage in negotiations aimed at resolving their differences in a constructive, peaceful, and collaborative manner, the Chairperson emphasises the imperative of consolidating and enhancing their cooperation to bolster regional peace and security.
Reaffirming the unwavering support of the African Union, he asserts the organization’s commitment to standing by their side and encouraging an African-led resolution to this mounting tension.
