African Development Bank Calls for Balanced Media Coverage of Africa

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group, delivered a passionate address at the All Africa’s Media summit in Nairobi, advocating for more balanced media coverage of Africa to counter prevailing negative stereotypes. Addressing nearly 300 participants from across the continent, Adesina highlighted the critical role of the media in promoting democracy and inclusivity while stressing the need to change false narratives about Africa’s development.

Despite significant progress, Adesina noted that Africa continues to suffer from misrepresentations in the media, which undermine its economic progress and investment potential. He underscored the importance of highlighting positive developments and economic resilience in Africa, citing the continent’s growth rate surpassing the global average in 2023, with 11 African nations among the world’s fastest-growing economies.

Referring to a 2021 Africa No Filter Report, Adesina stressed the need to reshape the narrative about Africa to reflect its true spirit and potential, countering outdated and negative clichés prevalent in media reports. He emphasised the impact of information on development and investor perceptions, urging a balanced view that showcases Africa’s successes alongside its challenges.

Adesina also addressed the transformation of the media sector, noting the impact of digital technology in democratising information but also complicating issues by blurring the line between fact and fiction. He proposed strategic collaborations among regional financial institutions to support the creation of a globally respected African media, highlighting the media’s role as a catalyst for development.

In addition to announcing the creation of an Annual Africa Media Prize to recognise and profile African journalists and media houses showcasing Africa’s achievements, Adesina proposed the establishment of a globally respected African media company. He called on development institutions to set up a joint repository of verified stories and pledged support for the African Journalists’ and Correspondents’ Fellowships to strengthen capacities.

Adesina urged media leaders to become advocates for Africa, promoting positive stories and highlighting tangible African accomplishments. The summit, themed “Re-engineering African Media in Times of Critical Transformation,” brought together media owners, government officials, corporate leaders, academics, and development partners to discuss the media’s role in shaping Africa’s future.
