Ademola Lookman has become the seventh Nigerian to win the CAF Men’s Player of the Year, claiming the prestigious title at the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco. His exceptional form for Atalanta and Nigeria over the past year secured him a deserved place among Africa’s footballing legends.

A Historic Achievement

The 27-year-old follows compatriot Victor Osimhen, the 2023 winner, as Nigeria celebrates back-to-back CAF Player of the Year wins for the first time since Nwankwo Kanu (1996) and Victor Ikpeba (1997).

“It is an incredible achievement,” Lookman said. “To join a list of great players who have inspired the game is special. For me, the most important thing is to set an example for the young kids who want to be like us.”

A Stellar Year for Lookman

Lookman played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League triumph, scoring a hat-trick in the final to secure the club’s first major trophy in 61 years. His performances also turned Atalanta into title contenders in Serie A.

For Nigeria, Lookman led the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 TotalEnergies AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, contributing three goals and earning a place in the Team of the Tournament.

A Night of Nigerian Glory

The CAF Awards also celebrated Chiamaka Nnadozie, who won Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, and the Super Falcons, recognized as Women’s National Team of the Year.

In a statement, President Bola Tinubu hailed these achievements as symbols of Nigeria’s resilience and excellence. “These athletes embody the Nigerian spirit. They make us proud and inspire us to dream bigger,” he said.

African Football on the Rise

The awards highlighted the growing global influence of African football. South Africa’s Ronwen Williams was named Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, while Al Ahly, Africa’s most successful club, retained the title of Men’s Club of the Year.

Lookman’s extraordinary campaign, marked by 27 goals and 13 assists across 57 appearances, stands as a testament to his talent, perseverance, and dedication. Observers note that his success resonates with Africa’s youth, inspiring them to dream of greatness.
