Senegal’s President-elect  Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Senegal’s President-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has pledged to lead with humility and transparency in his inaugural address following Sunday’s historic poll. With his main rival conceding defeat, Faye, a 44-year-old political newcomer, is set to become the youngest president in Senegal’s history.

“By electing me, the Senegalese people have chosen to break with the past,” Faye declared, emphasising his commitment to governing with humility and transparency. Addressing the nation, he outlined his priorities, including national reconciliation, combating corruption, rebuilding institutions, and addressing the cost-of-living crisis.

Faye expressed gratitude to outgoing President Macky Sall for ensuring a successful election process, as celebrations erupted nationwide. While the Constitutional Council is yet to officially announce the final results, provisional figures indicate Faye’s commanding lead, with about 53.7% of the vote.

His journey to the presidency has been marked by resilience and determination, from his humble beginnings in Ndiaganiao to his recent release from jail less than two weeks before the election. Despite initial obscurity, Faye’s integrity and commitment to reform have propelled him to the forefront of Senegalese politics.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Faye faces the task of implementing sweeping reforms promised during his campaign. With a focus on fighting poverty, injustice, and corruption, his presidency heralds a departure from traditional politics, advocating for change and accountability.

Born from a rural upbringing, Faye’s connection to village life underscores his grassroots approach to governance. Despite criticism of his lack of ministerial experience, Faye’s platform resonates with many disillusioned by establishment politics, offering hope for a new era of leadership.

Central to Faye’s vision is the replacement of the CFA franc currency with a new Senegalese or regional West African currency, symbolising his commitment to sovereignty and change. Additionally, his collaborative leadership style with ally Ousmane Sonko signals a paradigm shift in Senegalese politics, promising a more inclusive and participatory government.

Inspired by left-wing ideals and pan-Africanism, Faye’s presidency embodies the aspirations of a youthful electorate eager for transformative leadership. As Senegal embarks on this new chapter, Faye’s victory represents hope for a nation striving for stability and progress.

In the face of political uncertainty, Senegal looks towards the future with optimism, guided by the resolute leadership of Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
