Bouchra Karboubi: Pioneering Moroccan Referee Breaking Barriers in Football

At the age of 14, Bouchra Karboubi faced resistance from her family when she pursued her passion for football. Growing up in the conservative city of Taza in northeastern Morocco, where it was considered unusual for a girl to engage in sports, Bouchra’s brothers tore up her linesman’s flag in an attempt to prevent her from pursuing her dreams. However, over the years, Bouchra Karboubi’s determination and talent have made her one of Morocco’s most renowned women, especially in the realm of football. At 36 years old, she is now one of five female officials at the 34th edition of the men’s Africa Cup of Nations, a remarkable achievement.

From Torn Flags to Making History

Bouchra’s journey began with her deep love for football. Despite her brothers’ objections, she decided to give it a try, even against their wishes. In a significant moment of defiance, when her linesman’s flag was torn apart by her brothers, she simply stitched it back together with a needle and thread, determined to continue her pursuit. This incident marked the beginning of a career that seemed unstoppable.
