In a heartfelt tribute to honour the lives lost in the tragic Marrakech earthquake of September 2023, a cadre of revered African football legends, along with Moroccan counterparts, took part in an exhibition match. The match, a poignant display of solidarity, was organised ahead of the upcoming CAF Awards to be hosted in Marrakech.

The event, held at Marrakech’s venue, witnessed the revered African football icons engaging with over a hundred children from the region, accompanied by several football dignitaries. Among the distinguished African legends were El Hadji Diouf, Samuel Eto’o, Emmanuel Adebayor, Abedi Pele, Emmanuel Amunike, Ahmed Hassan, and other luminaries from across the continent. Notable women’s football stars, including Gaelle Enganamouit, Alberta Sackey, and Onome Ebi, also graced the match with their presence.

El Hadji Diouf, expressing the spirit of unity, emphasised Africa’s collective support during difficult times, stating, “When one country hurts, we come together to show support. We stand with the families affected by the tragedy.” Emmanuel Adebayor echoed the sentiment, underlining the importance of solidarity with the people of Marrakech.

The presence of local children at the stadium was particularly moving for the legends, who sought to inspire hope and convey their unwavering support. Gaelle Enganamouit highlighted football’s influential role in delivering messages of solidarity, emphasising the power of the game to unite people during adversity.

As the match concluded, the football icons engaged with young fans, spreading messages of hope and solidarity. Patrick Mboma encapsulated the collective sentiment, emphasising the significance of using football as a medium to express support and unity.

The Marrakech community has made remarkable strides on the path to recovery since the earthquake. With the CAF Awards 2023 being held in Marrakech, this event stands as a powerful testament to the profound impact of football, transcending the game to symbolise solidarity, hope, and unity in the face of adversity.
